Chrome Is It!

October 9, 2012 General, Version Updates Mark

With a nod to the old Coca-Cola campaign, I’m officially announcing that “Chrome Is It!”.  Google Chrome is the official web browser of Ascend Version 3.

Why only one browser?

My decisions regarding the development of Ascend are guided by the following principles:

  1. We will maximize the time we spend programming new features and improvements.
  2. We will deliver them to our customers as quickly as possible.
  3. We will deliver a quality product.

Supporting multiple web browsers works against these principles in several ways:

Why Chrome?

We chose Google Chrome as our official web browser for several reasons.

Version 2.5 Update:

We released Version 2.5 to everyone on October 1st.  Nearly 400 locations have upgraded so far.  If you haven’t joined them yet, click here for full details on what to do next.

Inventory Fantasy Camp:

Our spots are filling up for our November and December camps.  Click here for details and instructions on reserving your spot.

Have a great week!

  1. I am for Chrome if they have fixed their printer driver issues. In my experience IE is more compatible with Windows printer drivers. I suggest thoroughly testing Chrome with our peripherials and publish a device compatibility list that will be supported. Thanks for the updates. Keep up the good work!

Brian, this past sprint we validated that we are able to work with all of our current supported peripherals through Chrome. There’s more work to be done but we’re confident that this shouldn’t be an issue. We will make sure to publish what peripherals will be compatible with V3.

  2. I, unfortunately fall into the IE crowd. Intresting statistics though. I messed around with the parameters and found that, in the United States, IE has almost 20% greater usage (than Chrome) and in Canada the usage of IE is over 10% greater (than Chrome). My understanding is that the United States is the focus of Ascends dealers with Canada following. Unless I’m mistaken, there is almost double the users on IE currently in the United States than there are on Chrome. Food for thought. It sounds like the decision is made though. Don’t get me wrong, I will jump on the Chrome to keep using the best POS system! Keep up the good work.

Cory, I did the same with the charts. You’re right that they do vary by country and that IE is still the majority in many countries including the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Germany (all the countries where we operate). You’ll also notice that IE and Firefox are on a steady decline while Chrome is on a steady increase along with Safari. Before this project I, like you, was part of the IE crowd. I still use it for some sites but I’ve added Chrome to my laptop and I’m using it as much as possible. The good news is that Chrome is free and you can run it along with IE.

  3. Great decision, do you think it will be possible to run multiple shell’s on the same computer – ie: a service workorder list on one chrome tab and a sales window in the other?
    This would be amazing
    Keep at it!
