Here in Wisconsin, we’re digging ourselves out from another weekend snowstorm. There’s no more denying that winter is here – and we all know that in retail, that means it’s time for the holiday gift rush, followed closely by end-of-year inventories. So before it gets too hectic, we’re spending this week reviewing everything you need to know to make sure you and your staff are prepared.

Update to Winter 2016: The Winter 2016 version of Ascend is quickly becoming the most-installed version in recent history. Almost 60% of our retailers worldwide have already updated in just this first week! And with the ability to check Trek or QBP product availability directly from a transaction, simplified eCommerce product updates, and the inclusion of Case UPCs in inventory files (among a host of other great features), now is the best time to join them. Gifts Aplenty: Gift cards (or certificates, if you prefer to make your own) reign supreme this time of year. In Spring 2016, we separated the Gift Card payment type from Gift Certificate and prevented cashiers from accidentally allowing customers to go over their available balance. If you don’t commonly issue gift cards or certificates, refresh your knowledge with our training resources:

And don’t forget – you can print a gift receipt for any transaction in addition to a standard receipt from the Change Due screen. If you’re expecting a high volume of gift sales, you can even enable this option by default (on a single workstation, or all of them) – just check Print Gift Receipt in Options > Receipts > Defaults! (You can always disable the gift receipt on an individual transaction.)

Take Stock: Year-end inventory counts follow right on the heels of the holidays. Have you started your prep yet? We know inventory is never fun, but be sure to review our online help topics and Ascend University modules to minimize headaches on the day of your count(s).

Start your year off right by planning your cycle count schedule early. Regular counts throughout the year will help you find issues well ahead of your year-end count and let you spend less time tracking down missing inventory.
