Version 3 Project Update – Milestone Alert!

September 18, 2012 Version Updates Mark

We’ve reached a major milestone in our project to take Ascend to the cloud.  This week we started internal testing on the first release of Ascend Version 3.

It took me four steps to get set up:

  1. Get the web address from our fantastic development team.
  2. Open up my Google Chrome browser and paste in the address.
  3. Log into Ascend (picture below!).
  4. Start playing.  (My first transaction was to sell myself an extra-large University of Wisconsin cycling jersey. Go Badgers!)

I didn’t have to install anything and I could start using the program right away because it’s the same interface I’ve known for years.  It was a very simple and exciting experience.

Of course there are quirks to be worked out, but there’s nothing that we won’t get past.  Our next milestone is to get Version 3 up and running in Trek’s cafeteria.  Ascend currently handles over 500 transactions a day in there, so we have to make sure the system is dialed and fast.

Stay Tuned!

So excited for this. Keep up the great work!

  2. Bob Reardon says:

Mark, Are you setting this up to work with iOS and Android tablets?

    • mhoggatt says:

Bob, for our first release we are supporting Google’s Chrome browser on Windows XP, 7 and 8 (subject of a future blog). We do not have specific plans yet for iOS and Android tablets.

      • Tom McFadden says:

Internet Explorer’s supported too, I hope?

        • mhoggatt says:

No. For our first release we are only supporting Chrome.

          • Tom McFadden says:

Unfortunately Chrome doesn’t play well with our security configuration, namely Software Restriction Policy in disallowed-by-default configuration. Drop me an email if you want more info on the details of that problem. Kindly support IE9/10 at least, I would really appreciate not having to go to a bunch of extra work supporting Chrome as well.

Tom, I appreciate the concern about having to work with an additional browser for your security configuration. The added workload and complexity of working with multiple browsers is one of the main motiviations for our decision to go with Chrome. I’ll drop you an email to get more details. Thanks!

  3. Can’t wait – this is going to be awesome!

Congratulations Steve, great to hear about progress.
